Ron Clements');">Enlarge Photo The 2009 Major League Baseball amateur draft began Tuesday andfinishes up today.Mike Moore knew he wasn't eligible to be drafted this year, butif the Southwestern Illinois College freshman keeps improving asexpected, he could hear his name called during next year'sdraft."Mike's one of those guys that if he keeps progressing he couldplay in the pros," said SWIC coach Neil Fiala, who has seen severalplayers get drafted from his program. "He can hit, has speed andgood arm strength. You put those three things together, and that'swhat scouts like. He's not going to be drafted this year, buthopefully down the road, it'll work out for him."Junior college freshman are not eligible for the amateur draft,but the Oakville graduate said a pro career is one of hisgoals Oakley Sunglasses."That's definitely what I'm working toward," Moore said. "Mygoal is to put on about 10-15 pounds and get up to 195-200 pounds.I'll keep hitting all summer, and I'd like to get drafted nextyear Oakley Sunglasses. We'll just have to see. Playing (Division I) somewhere isalso an option."The way his freshman campaign began, it didn't look like Moorewould remain on the field for the Blue Storm. He began the season2-for-20 at the plate, but rebounded to finish the year second onthe team with a .362 batting average."I didn't think I was ever getting out of that slump," Mooresaid. "Normally, I'll hit ridiculously well at the beginning of theseason, then fall out of it. This year it was the opposite."The Blue Storm were ranked most of the year and reached thefinals of the Region 24 tournament. SWIC beat Wabash Valley College5-2 in the title game at Kaskaskia College's Larry Smith Field Supra vaider white.Moore was a big reason SWIC won the tournament. He batted .567 inthe tourney and was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles in thechampionship game to earn tournament MVP honors Supra Bandit."It was awesome, I don't know what happened," said Moore, whowill spend the summer playing for a Metro Collegiate team withseven of his teammates. "It seemed like the ball was a beach ballduring that whole tournament. It was unbelievable."The Blue Storm improved from a 32-19 record in 2008, and Fialais expecting even more improvements next year."We started off in the fall, and I thought we had a good team,"Fiala said. "Our hitting was solid all year long. All we needed wasour pitchers to pitch and they did toward the end of the year."Moore is one reason for his optimism."Mike did a great job, and we're expecting more of the same nextyear," said Fiala, who just completed his 16th season as headcoach.Not only did Moore finish the year among the hitting leaders, hewas also second on the team with 14 stolen bases. One area hereally excelled was in the field at a new position. Moore playedshortstop at Oakville, but was moved to third base at SWIC. It wasa move Moore embraced, and he was elected as the team's defensiveMVP."When ground balls are hit to shortstop, you're thinking aboutnot making an error," Moore said. "If a ball is hit to third, it'snormally a bullet, and you have no time to react. You just fieldit."The Blue Storm will add another Oakville player in the fall -pitcher Nick Schmiemeier Reebok Shoes. Moore and Schmiemeier will be roommatesnext year and Fiala is looking forward to having another strong armto turn to."You basically play 56 games in a little over two months. so youdefinitely need a pitching staff of about 10 pitchers Reebok Running," Fiala said."We're hoping Nick can come in and do a great job for us."If Schmiemeier can have even half the impact Moore did in hisfreshman season, SWIC and Oakville fans alike will have plenty tocheer about.Related Topics Articles:
