India Real Time spoke to him about the current voting season, which sees four states and a federal territory go to the polls for assembly elections. Edited excerpts:Ms. Malhotra: Do you think the ongoing elections in India’s four states–Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Assam–are a referendum on the Congress-led government’s policies at the center?Mr. Singh: State elections are fought on local issues, they don’t really reflect the mood of the country,cheap toms. With a little bit of luck, we will win in all four states.Ms. Malhotra: The Left Front is your chief opponent in West Bengal and Kerala,toms shoes sale, what is your analysis of the elections in these states?Mr. Singh: In West Bengal, the Left Front has been in power for 34 years; the time has come for people to ask for change. There is anger against the Left Front government. It is to the credit of Mamata Bannerjee [of Trinamool Congress] that she is fighting and able to counter the muscle-power and organizational strength of the Left.In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front should be able to defeat the Left. There is a huge anti-incumbency wave against the Left, and moreover, it is divided almost vertically because of infighting.Ms. Malhotra: Not long ago, in the first Congress-led government from 2004-2009, the Left Front was an ally of the Congress party at the center, now you two are opposing each other…Mr. Singh: At the time, the Left got what it wanted. They withdrew support over the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, but by and large the Congress and the Left worked well together. The Left were quite dependable as partners.
