Steve Birmingham');">Enlarge Photo Casino and county officials hope the odds will be good of aneconomic warm- up in Lemay with the opening next year of the RiverCity Casino and Hotel.The casino itself can now be seen rising from the grounds of theformer National Lead Industries site alongside the MississippiRiver. Casino officials say a boost is coming to the localeconomy.Mack Bradley Supra Bandit, spokesman for Pinnacle Entertainment, which alsoowns Lumiere Hotel and Casino downtown, said the Lemay project hasbrought about 600 union construction jobs to the area and thecasino will hold a job fair soon to recruit 1,000 permanent workersto staff the casino."We're going to be having a recruitment campaign that we'lllaunch later this year," he said. "We are going to be doing apretty aggressive local recruitment campaign and we'd like to drawlots of employees from the South County area.""We anticipate jimmy choo bags, just like downtown at Lumiere, creating hundredsof ancillary service jobs, such as the vendors actually servicingthe place," Bradley said. "We want to buy as many products andservices as locally as you can and that certainly is one of thethings we look at."Denny Coleman Reebok for Women, Executive Director of the St. Louis CountyEconomic Council, said another benefit to the community has alreadybeen realized."We've got 'clean letters' (certificates of completion) from theMissouri Department of Natural Resources on the contamination cleanup, and that was one of the major benefits the community saw fromthe development," Coleman said.Pinnacle spent $18 million to remove almost 17,000 tons ofcontaminated dirt and material from the 80-acre site, Coleman said,and spent another $1 million to bring in new clean dirt to raisethe surface to prevent flooding.Coleman also cited the near completion of the $20 million accessroad from Interstate 55 to the casino site as another boost to thearea."Obviously, the permanent jobs and the tax revenue that willflow to the local taxing jurisdictions and the amount of economicactivity being drawn down to the Lemay area are all major benefitsof the project," Coleman said. "Some of the benefits are yet tocome when it opens next year while others are already beingseen."The $450 million The north face online, 90,000-square-foot casino will feature 3,000slot machines and 60 gaming tables, a hotel with 100 guest rooms,retail and entertainment space.A second phase will include athletic fields, recreationalfacilities and a community center.The casino is still on schedule to open in the first part of2010, despite the downturn in the economy, Bradley said."Pinnacle had its financing for this project in place wellbefore the downturn in the economy," Bradley said. "This firstphase is $375 million and it is a 100 percent private investment inSouth County with no public assistance."Bradley said one leg of the new road, between South Broadway andthe casino, will be open in a few months. That part of the roadwill alleviate construction traffic on Hoffmeister Avenue, on thesouthern end of the construction site."We think our development will spur additional development Supra vaider white,particularly along the new access road," Bradley said. "One of thereasons the county chose our project is because of the neweast-west connector in that part of the county.
