En réponse, son nouveau roman, s'ouvrant ainsi sur une fin aussi radicalement désespérée, et répétée dans chacune de ses trois parts inégales, ne nous laisse à méditer que sur la part de hasard que l'auteur a bien voulu y laisser. Sous le regard de Kafka Rien de moins fortuit que cette fin du monde qui se manifeste dans ses prémices sous les yeux du seul narrateur. « Il fallait bien que cela commençât quelque part. » Dans ce long récit d'une disparition, celle d'une civilisation, d'un art, d'un peuple, tout est agencé, au mépris d'un réalisme de convention, au bé- néfice d'un sens supérieur.
