Mike Geiger, a 2009 graduate of McCluer High, admits that he wasnot much better than an average high school golfer when he playedfor the Comets. However, he's cool with that."Ninety-percent of kids have never played golf in their lives sothat's not too bad," he said.Geiger, who said he averaged a 42 for nine holes at his best atMcCluer, could have won conference and district titles and notgotten out of it what he eventually did, though. His experienceplaying prep golf helped him claim an Evans Scholarship to theUniversity of Missouri-Columbia. He found out he had been chosenlast January."I had planned I was going to get it when I started caddying soI wasn't too excited," he said of his reaction when he found out hewas getting the scholarship, http://www.sandalsamerica.com - http://www.sandalsamerica.com - Christian Louboutin , which pays for his tuition and housingat Mizzou where he is now a freshman. "I was relieved, though."Geiger, who will be 19 this month, admits he started aiming forthe caddy scholarship when he was in seventh grade at the urging ofhis brother, Matt, who was also an Evans Scholar. To that end, theyounger Geiger got a job caddying at Glen Echo Country Club inNorth County."It was fun," Geiger said of the job. "I liked it. It was anoutside job. I liked to work outside instead of inside and all thatstuff."He didn't immediately start playing the game but eventually didat the urging of his boss, Tom Donlen. Geiger quickly fell in lovewith the sport and he also figured playing it would help him landthe scholarship."They want something in addition to academics," said Geiger, whohad a 3.9 grade point average at McCluer. It didn't take him long to feel comfortable on the links thanksto some lessons from Donlen."I definitely got better, http://www.sandalsamerica.com - http://www.sandalsamerica.com - Prada ," he said. "The only way to get betteris to practice. Normally, I would just play once a week but beingat Glen Echo, I I got to play several times a week, http://www.classicabercrombie.com - http://www.classicabercrombie.com - Abercrombie outlet online ."He said the caddying job was quite entertaining at times, too."Nothing as funny as (the movie) "Caddyshack," but I definitelylearned a new language when I was around those guys," he said, http://www.michaelkorssupply.net - http://www.michaelkorssupply.net - www.michaelkorssupply.net . "Iheard a lot of curse words. One guy used a curse word in everysentence."While at McCluer, Geiger played for one of the best golf teamsthe school has had in a long time. Led by Jorge Marin, an exchangestudent from Spain, the Comets were 11-5 in 2008."That was a lot of fun," said Geiger. "Most of the kids on thegolf team - like 90-percent of them - had played baseball togethersince pre-school, http://www.sandalsamerica.com - http://www.sandalsamerica.com - Brian Atwood Slingback ."Again, though, the main reason he played high school golf was sohe could land the scholarship, which he said he needed badly."I wouldn't have been able to go to Mizzou without it," he said."I would have had to go to a junior college and I would not havebeen able to get a degree from a good college like that."In addition to Donlen, Geiger said he is also thankful to RobStewart of Florissant who was the caddy master at Glen Echo and nowis the club manager."He wrote a nice letter to the Western Golf Association for me,"said Geiger of Stewart, http://www.newoakleywholesale.com - http://www.newoakleywholesale.com - www.newoakleywholesale.com .The WGA sponsors the Evans Scholarship program, which wasestablished by and named for former Professional Golf Associationstandout Charles "Chick" Evans, Jr., who won 54 tournaments over acompetitive career that spanned four decades.Geiger said he is thrilled to be an Evans Scholar. He lovesMizzou and especially enjoys living with other Evans Scholarshipwinners in the house on the Columbia campus that was built just forthem."It's a great deal and everything," he said. "You don't think ofthe experience of living with a house full of kids who grew up likeyou did. We have a bunch in common and get along great."
