All of them clearly take a cue from the Axe deodorant commercials, which show women overcome by desire after inhaling the aforementioned product. (Mind you, Axe commercials in India are far more toned down than some of the bolder versions abroad.)The ministry last week sent a letter to the Advertising Standards Council of India, an independent body responsible for promoting responsible advertising, asking it to scrutinize these commercials. The council will respond this week, and decide whether the ads are okay, need to be changed or should be taken off the air, the council’s secretary-general, Allan Collaco, told India Real Time on Friday. They re not the final arbiter though—the broadcasting ministry can overrule them if it wishes, though in general it is supposed to accept the council s advice.Mr. Collaco also said, “We’ll be asking the said companies for an explanation.” He added that the ministry had made its request on the grounds of “indecency” and “wrong portrayal of women.” A news report by the the Indian magazine Outlook, suggested that ads aired by Axe, Wild Stone and Zatak are under the scanner. None of the companies in question could be immediately reached for a comment.The broadcasting ministry’s letter to the council complained that the adds “brim with messages aimed at tickling libidinous male instincts,” according to a BBC news report.
