In fact, he told a federal observer that “I don’t care what the court says. Looking Up Down South   There is plenty of good news, and some bad, in Latin America -- is anybody paying attention?  In his recent book, Forgotten Continent, Michael Reid of The Economist tries to explain the relative lack of U.S. and global attention to Latin America. “It is neither poor enough to attract pity and aid,” he writes, “nor dangerous enough to excite strategic calculation, nor until recently has it grown fast enough economically to quicken boardroom pulses.” Over the past few years, Americans have taken notice of Hugo Chávez, Venezuela’s radical leftist president, and they are now taking notice of escalating drug violence in Mexico, which has trickled over the U.S. border. But press coverage of Latin America often fails to provide a larger regional context. This makes it hard to keep the good news and the bad news in perspective.There is plenty of each. “Economic growth has been positive and robust across the region in recent years, hyper-inflation is a fading memory, and sound fiscal management has never been so widespread,” Brookings Institution scholar Leonardo Martinez-Diaz wrote in the Fall 2008 issue of World Policy Journal. 	» Ceux qui n'ont pas attendu cette rentrée littéraire pour découvrir l'auteur des Angles morts et des Ambitions désavouées connaissent l'art de Fleischer pour les incipit (l'Humanité des 11 septembre et 30 janvier 2003). « Comment le monde peut-il continuer ? » était la question inaugurale des Angles morts. En réponse, son nouveau roman, s'ouvrant ainsi sur une fin aussi radicalement désespérée, et répétée dans chacune de ses trois parts inégales, ne nous laisse à méditer que sur la part de hasard que l'auteur a bien voulu y laisser. Sous le regard de Kafka Rien de moins fortuit que cette fin du monde qui se manifeste dans ses prémices sous les yeux du seul narrateur. « Il fallait bien que cela commençât quelque part. » Dans ce long récit d'une disparition, celle d'une civilisation, d'un art, d'un peuple, tout est agencé, au mépris d'un réalisme de convention, au bé- néfice d'un sens supérieur. Lors d'un entretien accordé à -l'Humanité il y a juste un an, il nous disait l'importance qu'avait eue Kafka, entre autres, dans ses premiers projets romanesques. Dans ce sixième roman, plus que dans d'autres, l'univers de l'auteur du Procès ou de la Colonie pénitentiaire n'est jamais loin. Il fallait bien, donc, que la fin du monde démarre sous les yeux d'un narrateur possible, un artiste, un survivant, au moins provisoire, jusqu'à la fin du livre, ou jusqu'au prochain. Dans une petite ville de Hongrie, en juin 1933, un mal étrange sème la terreur. Pas la « peste brune », ou alors pas sous la forme que nous connaissons. Un sifflement, léger comme celui d'une flèche déchirant l'espace, un choc, bruit de hache se plantant dans le bois, et la victime s'abat, les mains sur les oreilles. À l'évidence, quelque chose se joue autour du son. Musique, silence, on ne sait pas ce qui vaut le mieux : la musique attire le mal. Ou alors en protège. Et encore, quelle musique ? Musique nationale, patriotique, folklorique ? Musique populaire, de taverne et de caf'conç ? Que faire de la musique « savante », classique ou contemporaine ? Quid de la qualité de l'interprétation ? Une ritournelle fredonnée par tous est-elle plus efficace qu'une interprétation solitaire, mais inspirée, d'une oeuvre géniale, sur le plus beau des instruments ? Le narrateur, musicien lui-même, professeur de piano, est le témoin et l'acteur de ces événements qui marquèrent le début de la fin du monde. L'allégorie est claire : le fléau, le mal, « la hache », compte tenu du lieu et de l'époque, on sait à quelle réalité historique le relier. Pour autant, le roman d'Alain Fleischer n'est pas une simple mise en fiction d'un discours politique. l'« art poétique » de l'auteur Le premier des trois récits de la Hache et le Violon, la « première époque », se présente comme un roman, et à ce titre va proposer une narration où le « romanesque », précisément,lunettes ray ban soleil, est donné comme objectif. Ainsi va se mettre au jour, par la pratique, l'« art poétique » de l'auteur. Pas seulement sa capacité à trouver une métaphore représentant, grosso modo, le nazisme et la capacité de l'art à résister, mais par ce qui constitue le coeur du métier de l'écrivain : en faire une aventure, y faire naître des personnages, les faire souffrir, espérer, aimer. Et transfuser cette vie dans les veines du lecteur sans en faire un esclave ayant abdiqué tout esprit critique. Cette première partie, la plus substantielle des trois, celle qui porte le nom de « roman », est délibérément placée dans une réalité problématique.
