the four authors, Meena Gupta, took a different view and supported clearance of the project (albeit with a few changes). However, she was in charge of the committee that gave the environmental clearances in the first place. Almost everything she says in her section is contradicted by the other three authors. Buried in this report is an interesting passage in which we see how minutes from a crucial Environment Ministry meeting were doctored to make the project look less threatening. It was in the following meeting in 2007 that Posco got its initial environmental clearance. Those who are interested can read my article on it here:http://www.currentintelligence.net/subcontinental/2010/12/2/villagers-fighting-steel.html 5:23 pm January 5, 2011 Shankar wrote: News reports such as this one are reading far too much into the report of one subcommittee of the Expert Appraisal Committee on POSCO. One should note that another, more powerful panel the Forest Advisory Committee has already given a report, cheap toms shoes, based on the enquiry committee report, saying the forest clearance for POSCO should be withdrawn. One more report (from the CRZ committee) is awaited. If the forest clearance is withdrawn, the project cannot go ahead in any case, as it will have no land to build on. Instead of unabashedly believing POSCO s propaganda on its project, authors like this should check out the real damage and devastation that this project can cause. Look up the majority report of the Meena Gupta Enquiry Committee especially its conclusions to find out more. 6:45 pm January 5, 2011 Rupa (author) wrote: @Anonymous @Shankar: Interesting points. I did note in the piece that Posco clearly had better PR and lobbying and your observations would seem to amplify this. I also note that both projects would create environmental damage and therefore the real difference in the outcomes were not environmentally based. Your comments had valuable nuance to this comparison. Many thanks.Rupa 6:47 pm January 5, 2011 Rupa (author) wrote: @jeffrey archerThanks for comment. I largely agree with you. As many commentators in India are pointing out, discretionary and opaque environmental regulation could if not kept in check become a substitute for license Raj and create rent seeking opportunities. One more crucial point that favoured Posco is that Mr Rahul Gandhi supported Posco over Vedanta. Jairam, being one of the more educated politicians in the country has to come out with a more open and broad framework for environmental clearences, toms shoes sale. It is appreciable that he is challenging people within his govt on some issue but to take an inclusive view he has to set the mechanisms more full proof.Furthermore, there is this stereotype that environment is all about the rural poor and the tribals. There is a huge section which suffers urban environmental mess. Just because the urban is generally stereotyped as well to do, it doesn me Related articles:
